This Mughal-style miniature shows a bearded nobleman seated on a tan cloth and a wine-red cushion decorated with stylised gold clouds. Around him on a richly patterned carpet are a guest, a musician, attendants and food. One attendant holds a fly whisk, an emblem of Indian royalty. Two books at the far right suggest learned company, and their covers, like the carpet, have central medallions and borders, reflecting the Persian taste the Mughals admired. It is painted in gum tempera and gold on paper, dated to around 1620.
On your wall: Its warm reds, tans and gold and its intricate patterning suit a study, living room or dining room, especially where a rich, textured scheme is wanted.
