This is a photograph of Acanthus mollis, the plant named in the title, made by Karl Blossfeldt in Berlin in 1928. It is a gelatin silver print, a traditional black-and-white process, and the original is small, about 26 by 20 centimetres. Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor, known for close-up studies of plants and other living things. A year after this image was made, he published his best-known work, Urformen der Kunst. He was drawn, as his father had been, to nature and the way plants grow. This image belongs to that body of work.
On your wall: Its quiet monochrome and botanical subject suit calm spaces such as studies, hallways, bedrooms and minimalist living rooms, especially alongside natural materials.

Karl Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and other living things, gathered in the 1929 publication Urformen der Kunst. Like his father before him, he drew inspiration from nature and from the ways in which plants grow.
