Ohara Koson made this colour woodblock print, titled "Blauwe nachtegaal" (Blue nightingale). A bird sits on a bamboo structure that serves as a scarecrow, set against water, grasses and shrubs. The image is built from a black outline block combined with separate blocks for colour, printed on paper. It measures about 24 by 25 centimetres and was published in Tokyo by Matsuki Heikichi. Koson worked as a painter and print designer and was at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements. The gently ironic scene, a bird resting on the very thing meant to frighten it away, rewards a slow look.
On your wall: Its small, nearly square format and natural subject suit a study, hallway or bedroom, and sit well beside other Japanese prints or in a calm, plant-filled corner.
