Claude Monet, 1882
Two women stroll along a clifftop above the sea, while Monet's quick, curving brushstrokes make the grass seem to stir in the wind.

Monet painted this in 1882, during a stay in the Normandy fishing village of Pourville, where he remained until mid-April. He had found nearby Dieppe too urban and grew increasingly fond of the countryside here. The two women are probably Marthe and Blanche, the eldest Hoschedé daughters. Monet was keen to place figures in a landscape without breaking the unity of the painted surface, so he used similar strokes and colours throughout. Short, curved touches make the grass seem to quiver, and softened versions of them suggest the women's windblown dresses and shawls and the swell of the sea. X-radiographs show he reduced the rocks at the far right to balance sea and sky.
On your wall: With its coastal scene of sea, sky and grass, it suits living rooms, hallways and bedrooms where a sense of fresh air and open space is welcome.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
