Frederic Edwin Church painted Cross in the Wilderness in 1857, in oil on canvas. The title points to the subject: a calvary, a cross set within a wild landscape. Church was an American landscape painter and a central figure of the Hudson River School, known for realistic detail, dramatic light and wide views. Today the painting belongs to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
On your wall: Its landscape subject and contemplative theme suit a study, a quiet sitting room or a hallway, where it can be looked at unhurriedly.
