Painted in 1907, this is the third work in The Ten Largest, a series by the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. Its title, Ynglingaåldern, translates as youth or the age of young adulthood, and it belongs to Group 4 within the series. Af Klint is regarded as one of the first major abstract painters in Western art, and a considerable part of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. Her paintings often resembled diagrams and gave visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a considered, modern piece can anchor the space and invite a longer look.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
