Ferdinand Hodler painted The Woodcutter (Der Holzfäller) in 1910, in oil on canvas. The title points to a figure at work with wood, a subject that sits within genre art, the tradition of everyday labour and daily life. Hodler, the Swiss painter, had moved from realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes towards a personal Symbolism, which he called parallelism, and this work dates from that later period. Today it belongs to the Von der Heydt Museum.
On your wall: A painting of a figure at work suits a study, hallway or living room where a strong, human subject is welcome beside natural materials such as wood.

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
