About this artwork

This is a leaf from an album of flower and bird paintings by Zhang Ruoai, and it takes mallow flowers as its subject. It was made in China during the Qing dynasty, in the 1700s, using ink and colour on paper. The small album format suggests a work meant to be viewed up close, and the pairing of ink with colour gives the blooms a delicate, considered presence. It is a gentle piece for anyone who enjoys botanical subjects.

On your wall: Its floral subject and soft ink-and-colour treatment suit calm spaces such as studies, bedrooms, hallways or reading corners, especially where a quiet botanical note is wanted.
