About this artwork

This woodblock print by Tsuchiya Kōitsu shows Nagoya Castle as evening settles in, with cherry blossoms in the foreground. The castle appears beyond the branches, so the view is both a landscape and a seasonal scene. The print carries the inscription 'Nagoya-jō' and a date corresponding to Shōwa 12, which is 1937. A publisher's seal also appears on the sheet, a typical feature of prints made in this tradition.
