This is plate 32 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The title explains the book's approach: caterpillars and worms of Surinam are drawn from life, together with their changes, each placed on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found. The work also deals with frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants. Merian was an entomologist and naturalist, and one of the earliest Europeans to record insects through direct observation. Her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. Plates like this one bring natural history and botanical detail together.
