Marsden Hartley painted this work in oil on canvas in 1913. It is entirely abstract, built from strong, simple shapes: a black triangle, bright orange circles, sharp zigzags and a yellow chevron band, all set against sweeping blue forms. The eye is pulled across the surface from one shape to the next, which suits a title that speaks of motion. Hartley was an American Modernist painter, poet and essayist. The work is held today at the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its strong orange, yellow, blue and black suit a living room, study or hallway where a confident, graphic piece can anchor a plainer, more neutral scheme.

Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist. He developed his skills as a painter by studying the work of Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that experience shaped his approach to the canvas. His writing sat alongside his painting as part of a wide-ranging creative life.
