About this artwork

Painted in 1928, this work shows a woman walking across a street at night. She is seen standing at full length, and the setting is a Berlin street. It is an oil painting by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the German expressionist who helped found the group Die Brücke. The original is held in a private collection. The title, Nachtfrau, places the figure at the centre of the picture and ties her closely to the night-time city around her.

On your wall: Its city-at-night subject and expressionist character suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, figurative piece can hold the wall.

About Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
