Kuniyoshi makes the moon the heart of this night scene, giving it a large, glowing halo. Shadows fall beneath the figures and the palanquin, a Western-style touch in a Japanese print. At the centre, a man sings with his mouth wide open, perhaps on his way home after an evening of drinking in New Yoshiwara. The pleasure quarter itself appears only as a line of low rooflines beyond the rice paddies. Nearby, a chatting pair and a wealthy passenger in a palanquin may be heading towards it. The work is a colour woodblock print from the early 1830s, made in Japan during the Edo period.
On your wall: Its moonlit night mood and lively figures would suit a study, living room or hallway, especially where you want a quiet focal point with a story.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a Japanese artist working in the ukiyo-e tradition, creating woodblock prints and paintings. He belonged to the Utagawa school and is counted among the last great masters of the style. His work stands as a late chapter in a celebrated Japanese tradition of printmaking and painting.
