Georges Seurat's Peasant Woman Seated in the Grass shows a woman sitting outdoors on the grass. It is painted in oil on canvas and dates from 1883. Seurat is remembered as a French post-Impressionist who devised the techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism. The painting belongs to the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. It is a modest, unhurried subject, and one that rewards a closer look.

Georges Pierre Seurat was a French post-Impressionist artist. He is remembered for devising chromoluminarism and pointillism, painting approaches built on the careful handling of colour and light. He also made drawings in conté crayon on rough-surfaced paper, a medium that suited his interest in tone and texture.
