Katsushika Hokusai, 1835
Hokusai reads a classical poem through the eyes of a confused nurse, and the picture gently misses the point. Fishermen haul a net while autumn smoke drifts by.

This colour woodblock print comes from Hokusai's series on One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets, made in 1835–36 in Edo-period Japan. He designed the series as though seen by a nurse who tries to illustrate classical poetry but misses its subtle allusions, which would have struck viewers as a comic mismatch. The poem is by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro and speaks of a long, lonely autumn night, an emotionally weary one. The nurse imagines something else: the physical labour of fishermen dragging a net upstream. Smoke billows across the scene and leads the eye to a figure in a distant house, perhaps the nurse herself.
On your wall: Its fishing scene and drifting smoke suit a calm study, hallway or living room, particularly where Japanese art or a quiet, story-rich picture is wanted.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. He helped widen the style beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants and animals. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, influenced Van Gogh and Monet.
