Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1897
A quiet, pink-panelled dining room, set out with a calm, measured order. Hammershøi turns a Louis Seize interior into a study in stillness.

Painted in 1897 in oil on canvas, this view shows a dining room in the Louis Seize style, from the artist's home in Rahbeks Allé. Pink panelling surrounds two doors, and several white chairs stand about the room. A dark demilune commode anchors one side, while a green-grey floor spreads softly beneath. It is an interior without figures, where furniture, doors and walls carry the whole picture. The work belongs to the Hirschsprung Collection.
On your wall: Its soft pinks, whites and green-greys suit calm living rooms, dining spaces, hallways and studies where a restrained, minimalist look is wanted.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
