About this artwork

Painted in oil on canvas in 1888, this work by the Anglo-Dutch artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema shows the young Roman emperor Elagabalus hosting a banquet. Diners are gathered on a raised dais, while a cascade of pink rose petals falls over the guests in the foreground. The setting is a Roman dining room with columns, and the meal is shown alongside the falling petals. It is a history painting, and it is now held in the Pérez Simón Collection.

On your wall: Its soft pinks and classical banquet scene suit dining rooms, libraries and elegant sitting rooms, where it can bring a sense of drama and period atmosphere.
