This is Plate 6 from John James Audubon's The Birds of America, showing the wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo. A female walks among grasses with a group of young poults following close by, and the printed caption runs along the bottom of the plate. It is a hand-coloured engraving, part of the large-format book Audubon produced between 1827 and 1838, in which he set out to give a pictorial record of the birds of North America. The plates were engraved in Scotland and England.
On your wall: Its natural subject and grassy setting suit a study, hallway, dining room or country-style living space where a calm botanical touch is welcome.
