This poster was made in 1898 by Eugène Grasset to advertise À la Place Clichy, a Paris business presenting itself as the leading house for oriental imports. Its subjects include carpets, shops and decoration. It is a colour lithograph, printed by Imprimerie Chaix in the Ateliers Chéret at 20 rue Bergère, and the original measures 140 by 85 cm, a tall format made to be seen in the street. Grasset was a Swiss-born decorative artist working in Paris, and the poster shows how advertising and design met in the city at the end of the century.
On your wall: Its tall, decorative format suits a hallway, study or living room, and sits well with vintage-inspired interiors or near rugs and textiles.

Eugène Grasset was a Swiss decorative artist who made his career in Paris during the Belle Époque. He worked across a range of design fields rather than a single medium, and he is regarded as a pioneer of Art Nouveau design. His work still speaks to anyone who enjoys decorative art.
