Henri Rousseau painted this work in 1908. As the title tells us, it shows a horse attacked by a jaguar, a meeting of two animals caught in a moment of tension. Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful reference to his job as a toll and tax collector. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left his post at 49 to devote himself to art full-time.
On your wall: Its dramatic subject of a horse and a jaguar suits a living room, study or hallway where a bold, characterful piece can anchor a modern interior.
