Painted in 1908, this landscape looks at Cagnes-sur-Mer, a town on the Mediterranean coast. Cypresses give the scene its title, and the composition also includes olive trees, broad-leaved trees and a house set into the land. Cross made it in oil on canvas. He is best known as a Neo-Impressionist and shaped the second phase of that movement, and his work influenced Henri Matisse and helped pave the way for Fauvism. Today the painting belongs to the Musée d'Orsay.
