About this artwork

This two-panel folding screen, made in late nineteenth-century Japan, takes its scene from the Tales of Ise, a tenth-century collection of poems and narratives. Its hero drinks sake and watches cherry blossoms, and composes a poem wishing the flowers would vanish so that the heart of spring might find peace. He leans on a shoulder rest, his sake dish on a lacquered stand. A plump young attendant tends the dishes with a ewer ready, while a companion sits with paper, ink and brush, waiting to write down the verses. Shibata Zeshin worked in ink, colour, lacquer and gold on silk.

On your wall: The blossom theme and gentle, contemplative scene suit a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, especially where you want a quiet seasonal touch.
