A quiet stretch of the Hudson, with a hazy mountain rising beyond still water and a small steamboat resting at a dock.

Painted in 1850, this oil sketch looks across calm water towards a large, softly hazy mountain. Reeds fill the foreground, and on the right a few trees stand beside a small steamboat moored at a dock. The scene is the Hudson River, and the handling is loose and immediate, as befits a sketch. Albert Bierstadt signed it in the lower right corner. The work is now in the collection of the SCAD Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its calm water, soft haze and natural greens and blues suit living rooms, studies and bedrooms where a quiet landscape is welcome.

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American artist, remembered above all for his monumental landscapes of the American West. His paintings present the region on a grand scale and celebrate its scenery, drawing the eye to wide horizons and the sheer size of the land.
