Ivan Aivazovsky, early 1840s
A tall ship leans into rough water as the full moon breaks through the clouds, while a smaller vessel keeps to the distant horizon.

Ivan Aivazovsky painted this night scene of a sailing ship on a heaving sea in the early 1840s. A tall vessel heels over in the swell, its sails catching the wind, while a full moon pushes through broken cloud above it. Far off on the right, a second, much smaller ship sits near the horizon, which gives a sense of the width of the open water. The work is in oil on cardboard, and it belongs to Aivazovsky's marine painting, the subject for which he is best known.
On your wall: Its moonlit sea and dark, atmospheric tones suit a study, living room or hallway, particularly where a calm, quiet focal point is wanted.
