This is Plate 47 from John James Audubon's Birds of America, and it shows ruby-throated hummingbirds, Archilochus colubris. Rather than a single bird, the plate gathers a male, a female and young birds among trumpet creeper flowers and leaves. The engraved title lettering is part of the composition. Audubon planned to make a complete pictorial record of North American birds, and The Birds of America was published as large colour plates engraved in Scotland and England between 1827 and 1838. This plate also relates to his accompanying text, Ornithological Biography.
