Painted in oil on canvas in 1930, this work carries the title Rythme, Joie de vivre. It comes from Robert Delaunay, a French artist of the School of Paris who, together with his wife Sonia Delaunay and others, co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. Delaunay's later work grew more abstract, and he was clearly fond of experimenting with depth and tone. The title suggests a painting about movement and delight, which makes it a lively piece to spend time with. It belongs to the Musée National d'Art Moderne and is held at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
On your wall: Its abstract, colour-led character suits modern living rooms, studios and offices where a lively focal point is welcome.
