Emil Cardinaux designed this poster in 1907 to announce a Schützenfest, a traditional Swiss shooting festival, held at Laupen. The castle of Laupen, Schloss Laupen, appears in the image, linking the event to its setting. It belongs to the tradition of early twentieth-century Swiss posters, where a clear picture and bold lettering did the work of inviting people to a local occasion. Today it offers a glimpse of how a community festival was presented to the public in Switzerland more than a century ago.
On your wall: Its retro poster character and castle subject suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where Swiss history or vintage graphic design is already part of the setting.
