About this artwork

This poster by Burkhard Mangold dates from 1911 and announces the fifth cantonal shooting festival of both Basel, a gathering of marksmen from Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. The flag of Basel-Landschaft is among the subjects connected with the design, a fitting emblem for an event held across the two half-cantons. It was printed by Gebr. Lips and belongs to the tradition of Swiss posters from the early twentieth century, when such sheets were a main way of announcing public events.
