Painted in 1895, The red poppy is a floral still life by Odilon Redon. It shows a bouquet of flowers in a vase, with the poppy of the title among them. Redon worked in oil paint on canvas, and the painting is now part of the collection at the Musée d'Orsay. Redon was a French Symbolist, known as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter, and this work shows his interest in flowers as a subject for painting.
On your wall: A bouquet in a vase suits a dining room, a hallway or a sitting room, and brings a botanical note to spaces where you want something gentle to look at.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
