This colour woodblock print shows several pleasure boats on the Sumida River. In the foreground we see the bow of one boat, named Sumidamaru, where two women and a boy sit beside a low table holding a bonsai tree. Behind them lie the riverbank and part of the Ryogoku bridge. Katsushika Hokusai made the print in Japan between 1808 and 1812. It was printed from a black line block with colour blocks, with blind printing for texture, and finished with touches of watercolour. The paper measures about 25 by 38 centimetres.
On your wall: Its gentle river scene and small domestic details suit a study, living room or hallway, particularly in calm, understated interiors that welcome a touch of Japanese art.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. He helped widen the style beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants and animals. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, influenced Van Gogh and Monet.
