Painted in 1913, this still life brings together two ordinary things: a violin and a drinking glass. Juan Gris made it in oil on canvas. He was a Spanish painter, born in Madrid, who worked in France for most of his career and was closely tied to Cubism. Still life gave him a simple subject through which to explore that approach. The work is now held in the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
On your wall: A good fit for modern living rooms, studies and music corners, where its still-life subject and Cubist character add quiet interest to contemporary interiors.
