This is plate 250 of The Birds of America, John James Audubon's large-format book of North American birds, published between 1827 and 1838. It shows a single Arctic Tern diving headfirst over the sea. The printed plate title and the engravers' credits appear on the sheet. The plates were engraved in Scotland and England as colour intaglio prints, part of Audubon's plan to make a complete pictorial record of the continent's bird species.
On your wall: Its seabird subject and coastal setting suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where a calm, nature-themed or maritime look is wanted.
