About this artwork

This is a drawing of Hermine Gallia, who came from a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. She met Klimt through the city's progressive circles and commissioned a painted portrait of herself. This sheet was made in preparation for that painting, which now hangs in the National Gallery, London. Klimt used black chalk with graphite on light brown paper. The lines are loose and sketchlike, which suggests he may have drawn her from life, swiftly recording her figure in the elaborate white dress she wore for the sitting.

On your wall: Its soft chalk lines and warm paper tone suit a study, bedroom, or quiet living space, particularly in calm, modern interiors that favour restrained, understated pieces.
