Painted in 1899, this is a landscape by Gustav Klimt, a side of his work that sits apart from his figure paintings. The square format draws you straight to the surface of a still, swampy pond, where the water reflects what surrounds it. Tall reeds fringe the edge, and behind them lie a meadow and a row of dark tree trunks. The scene is quiet and unpeopled, and the signature sits in the lower right corner.
On your wall: Its soft, watery scene and dark, woodland tones suit calm spaces such as a living room, study or bedroom, particularly where a quiet focal point is wanted.

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession. His work helped shape Art Nouveau in Europe. He made paintings, murals and sketches, centred mainly on the female body with a frank eroticism, and also painted landscapes. Among his best-known works are The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
