Claude Monet, 1872
A hazy harbour at daybreak, with small boats on the water and the sun low in the sky. This is the painting that gave Impressionism its name.

Monet painted this view of the port of Le Havre in 1872, in oil on canvas. It shows the sun rising over the harbour, with a sailboat and a small bark on the water beneath the open sky. The work was first shown in Paris in April 1874, at what would become known as the Exhibition of the Impressionists. It is credited with inspiring the name of the Impressionist movement. Today it belongs to the Musée Marmottan Monet.
On your wall: Its harbour subject and soft morning atmosphere suit living rooms, bedrooms, studies and quiet hallways, especially where a calm, light-filled view is welcome.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
