Odilon Redon's Quadriga. Il carro di Apollo, from around 1909, shows a chariot drawn by rearing horses as it moves through clouds. The driver is surrounded by a dense mass of flowers and dark berries, so the scene feels as much like a garden in bloom as a journey across the sky. The painting is in the colourful style of Redon's later work. Redon was a French Symbolist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter, and here colour carries the energy of the subject: movement in the horses, softness in the clouds and richness in the blossoms.
On your wall: Its warm, flower-filled colour and sense of movement suit a living room, a dining room or a stairwell where a dramatic yet floral picture can hold the eye.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
