William Morris, 1920
Small fritillary blooms in strong red and black, a pattern that nods to Indian silks while remembering meadows near Oxford.

Morris designed Snakeshead in 1877, at a time when Indian silks, widely imported from British India, were in fashion. The pattern is notable for its small motifs and its bold red and black colouring, which found favour with clients only briefly before paler shades returned. The colours hint at warmer, distant lands, yet the flower at the heart of the design is the fritillary, a wildflower Morris was fond of and remembered growing in the meadows near Oxford.
On your wall: The deep red and black and the small, repeating floral motifs suit a study, dining room or hallway where a rich, pattern-led accent is welcome.

William Morris was an English designer, poet, artist and writer, closely linked with the British Arts and Crafts movement. He played a major part in reviving traditional British textile arts and the methods behind them. His writing helped shape modern fantasy, and he also campaigned for socialism in Britain towards the end of the nineteenth century.
