Violet and Columbine is a woven textile sample by William Morris, dated 1883 and made at Merton Abbey in Surrey. It is woven in wool and mohair, and its title points to two garden flowers, the violet and the columbine, as its subject. Morris was a leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement and helped to revive traditional British textile arts and methods of production. This piece belongs to that tradition of cloth designed around flowers and made with care. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: With its floral subject, it suits living rooms, bedrooms and studies where you want a gentle, garden-inspired touch, especially in homes that favour traditional or Arts and Crafts interiors.
