Painted in 1873, this landscape by Camille Pissarro shows a factory beside a river at Pontoise. Rather than keeping industry out of view, Pissarro places it within the scene as part of the landscape, alongside the water. The work is in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the Israel Museum. It sits within Pissarro's Impressionist landscape painting, a tradition in which everyday places are treated as worthy subjects. It rewards a slow look at how the buildings and the river relate to one another.
On your wall: Its landscape subject suits a study, living room or hallway, particularly where you want a calm, observed view of a working riverside town.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
