About this artwork

This is a poster for Palm cigars, designed by Julius Klinger in 1906. Klinger worked as a painter, draftsman, illustrator and commercial graphic artist, and he was also a typographer, so it is no surprise to find his hand in a piece of advertising like this. The title, Plakat, Palm 06, simply names it as a poster, with the year closing the name. It belongs among early tobacco advertising posters from Germany, and it gives a clear sense of how products were promoted at the start of the twentieth century.

He trained at the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum HTL in Vienna. That mix of drawing, design and lettering shaped a career centred on the visual language of graphic art.
