Julius Klinger designed this poster in 1922 for A. M. Eckstein & Söhne, a cigarette factory in Dresden. It belongs to the tradition of tobacco advertising posters in Germany. Among the subjects it brings together are birds, a chaise longue and a Black African figure. Klinger worked as a commercial graphic artist, illustrator and typographer, and this poster comes from that line of work, where image and advertising message are meant to be read together.
On your wall: It would sit well in a study, dining room or hallway, and suits anyone who enjoys the look of early twentieth-century commercial posters.
