About this artwork

This woodblock print by Shibata Zeshin comes from his series Comparing Flowers, Volume 6, and dates from around the 1880s. The title points to a modest group of subjects: a bag, a length of bamboo and a plant. Zeshin was a Japanese artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his work in lacquer as well as for his paintings and prints. This print is now held in the Honolulu Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its modest subject and understated character suit a study, a hallway or a quiet corner of a living room, especially where Japanese or natural-themed decor is welcome.
