Made in 1857, late in Hiroshige's career, this colour woodblock print is one of a triptych. It belongs to a set of three triptychs on the poetic theme of setsugekka, meaning snow, moon and flowers. The scene is a panoramic view of Kanazawa, near Tokyo, with a coastline dotted with villages and fishing boats. In this sheet, a calm bay holds small islands and sailboats, with distant mountains beyond and a pine tree on a hillside. The signature and seal sit at the left. It dates from Japan's Edo period.
On your wall: Its calm bay and soft landscape suit living rooms, bedrooms, studies and quiet hallways, particularly where a restful, contemplative mood is wanted.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
