Hiroshige made this woodblock print in 1856 as part of his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. It looks at Ryōgoku Bridge and the great riverbank, with the setting understood as summer. Hirokōji, the busy district beside the bridge, is also part of the scene. The print belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition and to meisho-e, the genre of pictures devoted to celebrated places. Hiroshige is regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e, and this work shows his interest in everyday places as well as landmarks. The original is held in the Brooklyn Museum.
On your wall: Its river and bridge subject suits a calm living room, study or hallway, particularly in homes that favour Japanese art or a quiet, considered style.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
