About this artwork

George Inness completed The Home of the Heron in 1893, shortly before his death, at a time when he had finally found some comfort and success. It is typical of his late work: outlines blur, detail is loosely handled, and dim shapes seem to glow from within. A single heron is the only figure in the scene. Inness believed a painter's purpose was to pass on the feeling a place had stirred in him, and he was drawn to rivers, streams, hillsides, skies and clouds. His aim was less to record how nature looks than to convey its poetry. Here, broad brushwork and delicate tones bring out its stillness and mystery.

On your wall: Its soft, hazy tones and quiet mood suit calm spaces such as a bedroom, study or living room where a restful landscape is welcome.
