Schafschur, also known by its Italian title La tosatura delle pecore, shows the shearing of sheep, a subject Segantini's work shares with a small tradition of art on this theme. Giovanni Segantini painted it in oil on canvas between 1886 and 1887, and it measures 65 x 50.5 cm. Segantini is best known for his pastoral landscapes of the Alps, and this painting belongs to that world of country life. It is now in the Segantini Museum, where it hangs among other works by the artist.
On your wall: A rural scene like this suits a study, a hallway or a quiet living room, particularly where traditional or country-inspired interiors call for something calm and human.

Giovanni Segantini was an Austrian-born, stateless painter best known for his large pastoral landscapes of the Alps. He worked first in Italy and later in Switzerland, where he spent the last period of his life. In his later work he joined a Divisionist style with Symbolist images of nature. His paintings were widely admired and collected by major museums in the late nineteenth century.
