About this artwork

Painted around 1560 at the court of Akbar, this Mughal folio shows a Raja rising from his throne, hands raised in respectful greeting, to welcome the king of the ocean, who has taken human form. The Raja wears the white muslin tunic with long points, trousers and flat tied turban favoured by Akbar. The visitor is dressed like the Brahman at the left, who holds a rosary, in a wrapped dhoti and a sacred thread over the left shoulder, the mark of a high-born Hindu. Persian text runs above the scene. It is made in gum tempera, ink and gold on paper.

On your wall: Suits a study, library or quiet sitting room, where its pale whites, gold and finely drawn figures reward a closer look.
