Painted in 1905, this still life by Odilon Redon takes fruit as its subject, a long-standing theme in painting. It is worked in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. Redon was a French Symbolist who made drawings and prints as well as paintings, so it is interesting to see him turn to something as simple and familiar as a arrangement of fruit.
On your wall: A fruit still life like this suits dining rooms, kitchens and sitting rooms, especially where you want a note of nature and a calm, traditional subject on the wall.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
