About this artwork

Otto Freundlich painted The Mother in 1921, working in oil on canvas. He belonged to the first generation of abstract artists, and he greatly admired cubism. The title points to a subject as old as painting itself, yet Freundlich was part of a movement that moved away from literal depiction. Born in Germany, he spent much of his life in France. Today this work is held in the Berlinische Galerie.

On your wall: Its abstract character and a title that invites reflection suit a living room, study or quiet hallway where a modern piece can hold attention.
