About this artwork

Painted in watercolour in 1923, this work by Paul Klee invites you to look closely. Acrobats and circus jugglers emerge slowly from an intricate arrangement of shapes and colours, and two of the jugglers share one face and torso. Klee, who belonged to the Munich group Der Blaue Reiter, believed that colour and shape alone could carry emotions, moods and personal feelings. He liked to begin painting without any subject in mind, layering one coloured form over another until something recognisable appeared. Here, that process gives rise to a lively circus scene.

On your wall: Its playful, colourful pattern suits living rooms, studies and creative spaces where a modern, abstract piece can start a conversation.

About Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
